Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
Square's Communications team shares with the world how Square empowers businesses of all types and sizes with powerful and elegant solutions to help them start, run, and grow.
As part of the Communications team, you will bring a data-driven perspective and discipline to our team of global PR professionals, and provide quantitative support to uncover newsworthy insights that showcase our sellers, our business, and larger consumer trends. We are looking for someone who loves to tell stories through data and gets a thrill out of diving into a haystack of information to find that perfect metric. We are also looking for a problem solver, who will help create new processes for staying atop trends and analyze our PR work through measurement.
This is a technical data analyst role that sits on the Communications team with fellow storytellers, and collaborates with Block's centralized data and research teams. The position can be located anywhere in the US, and is open to remote work.
You Will
- Explore Square's vast payments and business data sets to craft meaningful narratives for external stakeholders such as journalists, business owners, local officials, and industry partners
- Use Square data to identify trends and insights, including seller usage patterns, payment volume, item-level data, growth metrics, and seasonal fluctuations
- Lead our efforts to survey and/or poll customers, consumers, and other representative populations to identify unique trends and storytelling opportunities
- Build a process for and lead the execution of PR message testing to understand what narratives resonate best with our target audience
- Monitor, measure, analyze, and report on PR campaigns to quantify our impact
- Collaborate with our communications, marketing, social, content, and government relations teams to help identify trends and insights that highlight Square's sellers and products
- Perform data analysis using SQL to create reports and analyses
- Use your technical experience with analytics tools and scientific rigor to produce newsworthy insights
- Challenge assumptions, and be comfortable working with big and sometimes complicated data to glean interesting, digestible findings
You Have
- 5+ years of analytics, research, or insights experience in a payment, product, marketing, communications, journalism, or policy role
- A command of data-driven storytelling, including how to spot spurious patterns, prevent correlation vs causation issues, and data cherry picking
- Advanced proficiency with database querying technologies (we use Snowflake and BigQuery)
- Understanding of quantitative research and statistical analysis with experience using data to support a point of view
- Experience driving analytics projects, surveys, message-testing, or polling from beginning to end: question formation, data exploration, statistical analysis, visualization, and presentation
- The skills to communicate complex analysis to any audience in verbal, visual, and written formats
- A track record of working in collaboration with multiple disciplines as an analytics partner
- A self-starter attitude: you instinctively and consistently create personal and professional stretch goals and meet them
- Curiosity, creative thinking, and a sense of humor.
- Passion for journalism, media, communications, or storytelling
- Proficiency with Excel, SQL and data visualization tools like Looker or Tableau
Technologies We Use and Teach
- Query language and databases (Snowflake, BigQuery)
- Python, R
- Visualization (Tableau, Looker)
