The Program

Maze Therapeutics offers a dynamic 9-week summer internship program designed to provide hands-on experience and professional growth opportunities. You will take ownership of your own projects, gaining practical insights and learning from Maze employees. You will participate in several events and trainings with your fellow interns, including professional development workshops and discussions with Maze executive leaders. The program culminates with a company-wide presentation, where you’ll share your work and celebrate your achievements. This immersive experience will allow you to contribute to innovative research, grow professionally, and explore career paths within the biotechnology industry.

The Position

We are seeking an exceptional Data Scientist in training to join our early research team as a Summer Intern. In this role, you will be responsible for visualizing genetic datasets to uncover insights into gene associations, burden tests, phenotypes, and trait outcomes.  Your work will directly support the development of disease-modifying therapies, collaborating closely with biologists and data scientists to advance Maze’s mission of developing precision medicines.

This is a unique opportunity to apply cutting-edge statistical genetics techniques, expand your understanding of drug discovery, and gain exposure to a multidisciplinary research environment.

How you’ll contribute

  • Collaborate with your mentor in Data Science, working closely with the Human Genetics and Functional Genomics teams.
  • Conduct burden tests, including SKAT and SKAT-O, to assess genetic associations with phenotypes.
  • Analyze and interpret results from loss-of-function (pLoF), missense, and synonymous genetic variations.
  • Develop and apply filters to phenotype data for enhanced specificity in analysis.
  • Visualize statistical results, such as log-scaled p-values and beta coefficients, to identify significant genetic correlations.
  • Integrate data from diverse sources, including various Biobanks.
  • Present findings through detailed reports, visualizations, and verbal communication to stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For

  • Education and Background:
    • Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.A. or B.S. in Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field (Master's or Ph.D. candidates are welcome to apply).
    • Knowledge of databases and resources like UK Biobank or equivalent.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication skills for presenting complex findings.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Experience with statistical methods for genetic data analysis, such as gene burden testing and association studies.
    • Proficiency in programming languages like R, Python, or similar tools for data analysis.
    • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and AWS cluster computing is a plus.
  • Key Attributes:
    • Experience with phenotype selection and filtering for high-throughput datasets.
    • Familiarity with tools for genetic data visualization and reporting.
    • A curious, motivated, and collaborative mindset with a desire to push scientific boundaries.

About Maze Therapeutics

Maze Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company harnessing the power of human genetics to develop novel, small molecule precision medicines for patients living with renal, cardiovascular and related metabolic diseases, including obesity. The company is advancing a pipeline using its Compass platform, which allows it to identify and characterize genetic variants in disease and then link those variants to the biological pathways that drive disease in specific patient groups through a process it refers to as variant functionalization. The company’s pipeline is led by two wholly owned lead programs, MZE829 and MZE782, each of which represents a novel precision medicine-based approach for chronic kidney disease.  Maze is based in South San Francisco.

Our People

Maze is comprised of a team of passionate and creative professionals committed to discovering and delivering transformative medicines to patients suffering from both rare and common genetic diseases. We are fostering a culture that encourages vision, initiative and the development of talent. Our supportive work environment inspires creative thinking and freedom of expression, resulting in a stimulating atmosphere where people enjoy coming to work. While we have a passion for advanced science and pride ourselves on excellence in execution, ultimately, everything we do is about patients.

Our Core Values

Further Together – Our path is paved with challenges, but with resilience and a team-first mentality, we’ll achieve our mission.

Impact Obsessed – We embrace the bold, take calculated risks, and learn from our mistakes to improve the lives of others.

Stand True – Our integrity is foundational; it guides us no matter the obstacle.

The internship is scheduled to commence on June 16, 2025, and will conclude on August 15, 2025 (with potential flexibility in dates).

The expected hourly rate for this role is as follows:

Undergraduate: $28.00/hour
