We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) has initiated an exciting journey to bring together and further strengthen our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new, central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). gCS is on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world.

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count.

We are seeking a Data & AI Policy Analyst to help propel these efforts. This role sits within the data operations & usage strategies group of the Data Excellence team. The candidate will play a key role in defining data strategies across gCS, in the context of overarching trends in computational advancements and global legislation. This role will be a key connection point between computational scientists, laboratory scientists, policy analysts, privacy experts, intellectual property experts and other colleagues across Roche.

Onsite presence, on our South San Francisco campus, is expected for at least 3 days a week. Due to the nature of the role, the candidate may join meetings with globally distributed colleagues in the 7-9am PST timeslot.

The Opportunity:

  • Collaborate with regulatory affairs colleagues and privacy experts across Roche and Genentech to understand emerging changes in the international landscape that affect how we collect, store and analyze data (including AI and data legislation, e.g. GDPR, EU AI Act, EHDS, HGRAC), and communicate the implications to scientist colleagues.

  • Collaborate with scientists in gCS Computational Biology & Translation and Machine Learning Drug Discovery to align computational and AI/ML plans with available data assets and policy requirements, and disseminate trends to policy experts within Roche.

  • Collaborate with globally distributed colleagues, including representatives from Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) and Product Development, as a gCS representative to deliver Pharma-wide data strategies, policies and recommendations for best practices.

  • Create implementation plans for data usage and access management for the Data Excellence team, based on unique needs in gRED, that reflect Pharma strategies.

  • Create the data strategy components of computational plans and assist in developing the gCS Data Ecosystem (e.g. advising and operationalizing data policy and data sharing practices).

  • Assist in building out a strategy for how external data provider vendors are evaluated and selected (e.g. informatics and FAIR data management capabilities).

Who You Are:

  • A combination of undergraduate and graduate degrees is expected in the following disciplines: (1) Biological sciences, chemistry, or clinical sciences (2) International affairs, policy, or public health-related fields (e.g. MPH, MA). Relevant work experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree in one of these two areas.

  • Data & AI policy analysis experience, preferably in an international context.

  • Prior experience working with computational scientists.

  • Experience in aligning diverse stakeholder groups, in viewpoint and technical context and with change management and embedding new ways of working within organizations.

  • Excellent written communication skills and presentation skills, especially in tailoring messaging for audiences of differing backgrounds.

  • Prior experience developing machine learning/AI models and CIPP/US or CIPP/E certification is a nice to have
