The Business Services Representative performs customer service tasks pertaining to the collection and issuance of residential and commercial building permits. In this role, you will assist the public with general inquiries in all areas of Community Development while providing a high level of customer service.
The Community Development Department is comprised of 4 divisions responsible for a wide range of services from mapping to code enforcement. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists the public in person, by phone, and by email regarding residential and commercial building permits. Enter and issue residential and commercial building permits. Once certified, review and approve basic building permits.
- Daily research for customer inquiries. Research plot and plat plans and reprint building permits when necessary.
- Transcribes and types letters, memoranda, reports, and other documents.
- Interacts with staff from other departments, business owners, contractors, municipal, county, and state officials, and the public in person, email or by telephone to respond to inquiries, receive complaints or resolve problems.
- Receive commercial submittals and plan review fees. Enter fees associated with plan case reviews.
- Maintains files and records of departmental operations.
- Collects fees and prepares daily deposits for revenue collected within the department.
- Orders supplies and equipment.
- Close out permit files and issue Certificates of Occupancy and Certificates of Completion.
- Cross-train in all areas of Community Development including Business Services and Codes to assist with business licensing and code violation inquiries.
- Assist in preparing and distributing monthly statistics and reports.
Performs other tasks as assigned by the Business Services Coordinator, Codes Administrator, or Community Development Director.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
This position requires a level of education typically obtained by the completion of a high school diploma, (GED or Homeschool Diploma), Vocational School, or equivalent education or training program completion.
1-3 years in customer service or a related field is preferred. Municipal Planning experience is strongly preferred but not required.
Effective customer service skills (written and verbal) are required.
SKILLS, COMPETENCIES & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Skills in operating general office equipment. Microsoft Office skills are required. General knowledge of the construction trade is helpful. Knowledge of general office procedures is required.
Competencies – Ability to handle challenging interactions and solve complex customer issues; ability to enter financial and other data accurately; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out general oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements – Must have the physical ability to: sit for prolonged periods; understand normal conversation; physically move from one location to another; operate assigned equipment and tools; retrieve physical and electronic resources and information necessary to complete assigned tasks.

The pay rate for this full-time position is $16.29 hourly. This is a benefits-eligible position.
