Location - Irvine, CA or San Diego, CA. This is an on-site/in-person role, 3+ days in office per week. If San Diego based, occasional travel to Irvine manufacturing facility.

Summary/Objective

The Cost Accounting Manager will report to the Corporate Controller.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Operate the inventory and cost of goods sold functions.
  • Maintain the Company’s standard costing system, participate in make vs buy decisions, record journal entries, perform labor analyses and cost reduction projects, manage the month end close process to ensure all deadlines are met, and support the operations and supply chain departments.
  • Review and analyze gross profit / margin and manufacturing related variances, create and maintain policies, procedures, and SOX controls around these functions, and oversee regular inventory cycle counts and physical inventory counts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing process for the cost of goods sold and inventory and ensure accuracy of various system and manually generated transactions/entries, including but not limited to inventory in transit as well as inventory and warranty reserve analyses.
  • Prepare inventory and cost accounting entries and account reconciliations.
  • Provide fluctuation analysis explanations for various components of gross margins, purchasing and manufacturing variances, including freight and purchase price variances (PPV).
  • Review manufacturing variances and work with the operations department to reduce these variances.
  • Provide accurate and timely inventory and costing reports to the operations teams in order to support the Company’s continuous improvement approach.
  • Coordinate with supply chain and operations departments to discuss and resolve issues in areas such as production, purchasing, accounts payable, receiving, and shipping.
  • Monitor transactions and processes including inventory movement, scrap, cycle counts and cost of goods to ensure accuracy and compliance with corporate policies.
  • Maintain standard costs for all raw materials, WIP, semi-finished and finished goods processes to ensure accuracy of inventory valuation and support annual manufacturing cost standard updates.
  • Analyze standard costs and review the standard cost roll-ups for new products and new production operations and investigate/resolve large variances prior to finalization of rolling standards.
  • Oversee physical inventory and cycle counts with operations department.
  • Continuously review current product costing methodology and process and identify improvement opportunities as the company grows.
  • Develop and maintain SOX controls related to costing and inventory.
  • Develop excess and obsolete reserves policy based on Accounting Standards Codification and US GAAP.
  • Work with operations teams to analyze inventory for potential excess and obsolete reserves and make related entries in accordance with the company’s policy.
  • Support in the preparation of annual budgets and re-forecasts.
  • Act as financial support for Operations leadership team for all make vs buy decisions, cost reduction and efficiency projects.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing and/or life sciences industries.
  • Experience with month-end closing and working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage well through ambiguity and complexity.
  • Familiarity with SEC reporting requirements and/or experience working in a public company environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ERPs, accounting software and experience with financial reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate with a variety of other functional areas including operations and supply chain departments
  • Analytical ability to develop and implement improvements or recommendations.
  • Self-motivated individual with ability to work with minimal direction from others, focusing on results and adding value to accounting operations and growth of the Company.
  • Able to work well with senior executives and team, as well as mentor/lead other team members.
  • Ability to operate under deadline pressure.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopier, and scanners.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to be independently mobile. The employee is also required to interact with a computer, and communicate with co-workers.
  • This position requires travel depending upon business needs.

Salary Range

$100,000 - $150,000
