Working at Transurban is different; it’s a place where you can see the benefits of your work play out in real life, every day. We create city-sized solutions—building and operating safer, smarter, and more sustainable roads—to solve pressing transport challenges that are slowing cities down.

About the role

We’re seeking a Corporate Counsel  for 18 months to support Transurban’s delivery of the West Gate Tunnel Project (WGT Project) in Melbourne. You’ll join an innovative team who are collaborative and thrive in a fast-paced, Agile environment. You’ll contribute to lasting and positive changes that shape the future of our cities and communities. It’s meaningful, challenging, and exciting work.

Together with the Victorian Government, Transurban is working to develop and deliver the West Gate Tunnel Project.

As a member of the Transurban Legal team, this position is responsible for providing high-quality legal advice to those parts of the Group within their area of responsibility. As one of our Corporate Counsels, you must ensure that legal obligations are met, and legal risks managed, while seeking maximum alignment with the Group’s business objectives and protection of its interests and reputation.

The position involves the provision of legal advice to support continued delivery and integration of the WGT Project, including contract administration, claims management, commercial transactions, regulatory issues, and management of external legal advisers. You must be capable of building strong and effective working relationships with people at all levels across the Group and representing Transurban in meetings or communications with external stakeholders.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Provide high-quality legal advice to support the continued delivery and integration of the WGT Project.

  • Assist with contract administration, negotiation, dispute resolution, and the drafting of relevant documentation.

  • Ensure legal obligations are met and legal risks are managed while aligning with the Group’s business objectives.

  • Build strong and effective working relationships with people at all levels across the Group.

  • Represent Transurban in meetings or communications with external stakeholders.

  • Manage external legal advisers to meet the Company’s commercial objectives and manage associated costs effectively.

  • Assist with the management of claims, disputes, and litigation arising in relation to the WGT Project.

This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:

  • Post-qualification experience within a law firm or relevant corporate sector.

  • Law degree and qualification as a lawyer in Australia or comparable jurisdiction.

  • Admission as a solicitor in Australia and current practicing certificate.

  • Ability to interpret legislation and legal requirements and apply them clearly and effectively to relevant business operations.

  • Good technical skills, with experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.

  • Proactive approach to managing legal risk.

  • Ability to build effective working relationships with individuals at all levels both within the organisation and externally.

Highly regarded:

  • Experience in construction law, major projects (including Public Private Partnerships), and litigation/dispute resolution matters.

If you meet some of these requirements, but not all, we encourage you to submit your application.

With a career at Transurban, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits, including:

  • A range of flexible working and leave options, including the option to purchase an additional six weeks of leave each year.

  • 16 weeks paid parental leave (regardless of gender or carer status), with no waiting period, with Superannuation paid during unpaid leave as well.

  • Learning and development opportunities to support your career interests.

  • Health and wellbeing support—access to Headspace and our EAP program, wellness facilities, and more.

  • Share offers and insurance benefits.

  • Social activities, community give-back programs, and paid volunteer days.

We offer a range of flexible working and leave options, so you can balance your work and life commitments and interests. Have a conversation with us about how this could work for you.

We embrace diversity with a foundation of safety, wellbeing, and inclusion; where everyone belongs. We treat everyone with fairness, consideration, and respect, regardless of gender, gender identity, marital or family status, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, cultural or socio-economic background, perspective, and experience – whether they work for us or not. We want to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe to express ideas, questions, and concerns.

We strongly encourage applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people living with disability. If you require any adjustments or support during the recruitment process, please contact us on [email protected].
