The Corporate Counsel (Employment) function at OMERS is accountable to ensure that OMERS legal risks are well managed while supporting OMERS business units, including Oxford Properties. This individual will be tasked with planning, executing, and supervising a variety of complex legal projects/issues, including engaging and managing external counsel. 
The Corporate Counsel (Employment) will be responsible for providing legal and business advice and support on employment and labour, general corporate, commercial, and general business matters that arise as part of OMERS business and corporate operations globally. 

As a member of this team, you will be responsible for providing legal support to: 

  • The Chief Legal & Sustainability Officer and the Corporate Legal team on various matters;

  • The OMERS Human Resources team with respect to all manner of global labour and employment matters; and

  • OMERS generally with respect to corporate, commercial and policy matters.

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience working as a labour and employment lawyer;

  • Significant employment and labour law experience, including with respect to employment contracts and letters, severance negotiations, policy review, employment and labour law litigation, collective bargaining, workplace investigations, human rights, and otherwise providing advice with respect to all manner of employment and labour law issues;

  • Some experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts;

  • Fully qualified to practice law in Ontario;

  • Exposure to the public pension and investment industries;

  • Highly developed interpersonal and relationship management skills;

  • Strong business acumen;

  • Excellent negotiating skills;

  • Sound judgement and high integrity;

  • A bias for action and possess a high degree of initiative; and

  • A knack for getting things done.
