Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to lead all aspects of financial operations, reporting, and compliance. This is a pivotal role for a detail-oriented, strategic thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, start-up environment and is passionate about building scalable systems and processes from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tax compliance
- Lead month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow projections, and investor-ready reports
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls and accounting policies to ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies
- Partner with executive leadership to provide financial insights and scenario planning to support business strategy and fundraising activities
- Manage the company’s budgeting, forecasting, and cash management processes, including banking, risk management and insurance
- Work closely with external auditors, valuation advisors, tax advisors, and other consultants to support audits and tax compliance filings
- Support equity and partnership financing, including preparation of disclosure schedules, document review, data room development and management, and financial support of due diligence processes, as needed
- Assist in the implementation and optimization of accounting systems and software
- Assist with specific projects and initiatives unique to a fast-growing biotechnology start-up, such as business process improvements
- Perform such other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be needed
- Mentor or manage junior accounting staff or outsourced partners, as required
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred; CPA strongly preferred
- 5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 2 years in a senior finance role
- Prior experience with a Big Four certified public accounting firm, biotech/life sciences, or VC-backed start-up preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP; experience with accrual-based accounting in a pre-revenue environment is a plus
- Proven experience managing audits, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Comfortable rolling up sleeves and working in a lean, high-growth environment
- Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and priorities
- Proficiency with NetSuite, or similar accounting software
- Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and communication abilities
