About the Role:

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be responsible for the accounting and finance team operations of the Company, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an accurate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the Company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting standards in the US and SEC requirements. A successful candidate will have experience building strong foundations within rapidly growing organizations and be able to flex between scaling and implementing processes, SEC reporting, and operational work.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Preparation of Skye Bioscience Inc.’s consolidated financial statements, including its three wholly owned subsidiaries, on a quarterly basis for SEC reporting purposes, including the preparation and coordination of the Company’s Forms 10Q and 10K.  

  • Applies and maintains appropriate controls for processes, accurate cutoffs, timely account reconciliations and documentation for transactions.  

  • Complies with local, state, federal and international government reporting requirements and tax filings. Including the management of the Company’s tax advisors and review of tax information.  

  • Prepares annual budgets, budget variance reports and quarterly forecasts 

  • Manages and processes biweekly payroll through an outside vendor  

  • Ability to identify and delegate technical accounting matters that require analysis by third party accounting consultants. Along with the ability to explain the nature and business purpose of such transactions to the Company’s auditors and manage the review process.  

  • Maintains accounting software and related interfaces.  

  • Recommends policy, procedure and process developments and improvements. 

  • Provides support to the CFO for various banking needs. 

  • Implements and ensures compliance with SOX 404 and our internal accounting/financial controls. 

  • Provides supports to the CFO with respect to renewal and management of company insurance programs. 

  • Assists with accounting activities and other duties as required. 

  • Coordinates the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audits and quarterly reviews 

  • Management of outside tax professionals to coordinate the timely filing of all tax filings 

  • Performs special projects and duties as required or requested by the CFO 

  • Administration of the Company’s equity platform  

  • Effectively manages two accounting personnel and has the ability to multi-task and manage company stakeholders, including vendors, department heads, and external international accounting teams for the accurate accumulation of information.  

Qualifications: 

  • CPA or  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Economics  

  • Minimum of 8 years of directly relevant experience working for public biotechnology companies including: 

  • Strong attention to detail and focus on generating accurate (and timely) financial statements 

  • Demonstrated understanding of US GAAP  

  • Strong experience in Sarbanes Oxley compliance, management reporting, financial planning and analysis, technical accounting research and implementation of business process improvement 

  • Demonstrated proficiency in scaling financial reporting systems to collect data accurately by project and study for management and board reporting.  

  • Skilled at financial modeling and conducting analysis 

  • Strong business acumen 

  • A proven track record of process improvement and experience with financial systems and process change initiatives 

  • Experience with accounting system implementations strongly preferred 

  • Expertise in Microsoft Word and Excel, and in financial, equity, payroll, and cloud-based ERP software, Payroll Systems (experience in Sage Intacct, Workiva and Certent strongly preferred) 

  • Understands business implications of decisions, has extensive knowledge of industry and competition 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, with demonstrated ability to: 

  • Create and communicate a clear vision within the organization which effectively aligns resources to achieve functional area goals 

  • Interact easily with all levels within the organization in a tactful, mature, and flexible manner  

  • Demonstrated ability to build trusting and credible relationships throughout an organization 

  • Change the thinking of or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations 

  • Provide leadership in projects and teams through: 

  • Identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner; gathering and analyzing information skillfully; developing alternative solutions

  • Delegating work assignments, matching the responsibility to the person; set expectations and monitors delegated activities; providing recognition for results 

  • Ability to be flexible in response to change  

Actual base salary for this role will take into consideration factors such as relevant experience, skills and qualifications for the role. Skye currently offers health benefits for eligible employees.
