Job Summary

Digital Editors help elevate the reach, engagement, and impact of The Inquirer's indispensable journalism. Using news judgment, analytics, and a keen sense of what people are talking about, you will draw in new readers and deepen our connections with existing audiences. With your finger on the pulse of both the news and digital best practices, you will be one of the newsroom's leading strategists, helping grow and develop The Inquirer's presence across platforms. You'll work with editors, reporters, visual journalists, and developers on alternative story formats, driving digital-first coverage, push alerts, A/B testing, special projects, and homepage display to make our journalism more engaging, timely, and useful to readers. You'll be an evangelist for audience needs and a driver of our digital transformation.

What You'll Do

  • Work with editors and reporters on story assignments, story formats, and publication plans to make Inquirer journalism more engaging, timely, and useful
  • Effectively communicate new tools, formats, and digital strategies to editors and reporters across the newsroom
  • Work with the analytics department to get a sense of reader habits and how to further engage digital audiences
  • Incorporate analytics in daily work to inform decision making and communication with reporters, editors, and newsroom leaders
  • Manage projects, including longform stories and custom story packages
  • Write and workshop headlines for multiple platforms
  • Write and workshop push alerts and other outreach to targeted audiences
  • Train editors and reporters on best practices; find opportunities to improve digital workflow
  • Stay on top of news in Philadelphia and beyond
  • Produce content, including occasionally writing the first stages of breaking news, curating outside links, or creating image galleries, videos, polls, graphics,
    landing pages, and other elements

A Digital Editor should

  • Have exceptional news judgment
  • Understand existing and new audiences and how to reach them
  • Deeply analyze data to inform decisions on strategy and tactics
  • Quickly analyze data to inform decisions in the moment
  • Advocate for readers' needs in the newsroom
  • Adhere to, or even lead, ongoing improvements to procedures and workflows
  • Bring an aesthetic eye to overall coverage
  • Have a background in digital production
