Job Summary
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
The Propulsion Science Department (PSD) is seeking a Chemical Propulsion & Environmental Science Section Manager (Propulsion Engineering) with a strong foundation in chemistry, gas dynamics, combustion, and high-pressure experimentation. This section solves a wide range of launch vehicle and spacecraft propulsion-related issues at various phases, from technology proof of concept to anomaly resolution of propulsion systems in use on flight vehicles.
Work Model
This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA, which requires 100% onsite work with remote flexibility as the business needs allow.
What You'll Be Doing

  • Managing a team of scientists and support staff working multiple projects. You will identify issues, concerns, and needs in the areas of chemical propulsion and environmental science relevant to launch vehicles, spacecraft, and ground systems and work with your team to develop recommendations and solutions
  • Work closely with customers and stakeholders to manage test and analysis tasks
  • Conduct line management functions including staffing, mentoring, establishing technical direction, allocating staff support, and communicating with upper management regarding technical and programmatic issues
  • You will work with management, senior staff, and customers to develop strategic directions, identify new opportunities, and develop proposals to execute on such opportunities


What You Need to be Successful - Manager - Propulsion Engineering
Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
  • A minimum of (6) years of applicable professional or educational experience in a propulsion-related area is required
  • Expertise in chemical propulsion technologies, combustion device testing and analysis, and high-hazard experimentation systems is required
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent working relations with customers and contractor personnel
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • PhD degree in a STEM field or equivalent is strongly preferred
  • (8) years of experience in experimental propulsion research directly applicable to large liquid rocket engines or spacecraft thrusters
  • Experience with combustion diagnostics, including sensors and optical diagnostics, chemical kinetics, thermal measurements, and material erosion is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with the broader chemical propulsion landscape, including National Security Space (NSS) needs, commercial development, and civil mission requirements
  • Experience in leading a cross-disciplinary team is preferred

The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
