Job Description
SUMMARY
Under the direction and supervision of the Café Director and Chef, the Cafe Assistant’s primary responsibility will be to provide a general level of assistance with the kitchen, including general food preparation, kitchen duties, and cleaning. Responsible for following all food health and safety regulations, displaying exceptional organizational skills to ensure the timely completion of kitchen duties.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
- Preparing meal ingredients for the chef, including retrieving, weighing, measuring, peeling, cutting, grinding, stirring, and/or straining vegetables, fruits, meats, poultry, seafood, soups, sauces, and other foods.
- Stores food items according to temperature requirements.
- Adheres to all food hygiene and health and safety requirements in order to meet regulatory and company standards.
- Maintains kitchen and work areas, utensils, and equipment in a clean and orderly condition, including mopping and sweeping areas as required.
- Segregates and removes garbage, replaces garbage bags, and washing garbage cans.
- Unloading of food supplies from delivery trucks.
- Ongoing maintenance and management of food storage, including removing expired or spoiled ingredients from the refrigerator, freezer, and stockroom.
- Packing food orders as needed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adherence to all First United Policies and Procedures
- Dresses professionally
- Complete all required compliance exams on an annual basis
- Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education and Work Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Proven work experience helping in kitchen settings (minimum requirement of 1-year of experience).
- Food Handler’s license required.
- Sound knowledge of food safety standards and procedures.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.

- Professional, pleasant attitude and appearance with excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise
- Excellent organizational skills, with an attentiveness to cleanliness at all times.
- Exemplary customer service attitude with an ability to be anticipatory of others needs
- High-level of professionalism
- Multi-tasking, able to prioritize tasks and pivot where needed with judgement to escalate issues when needed, with a sense of urgency and ability to stay calm under pressure.
Physical Working Conditions
This is somewhat sedentary work that requires the following physical activities:
- Must be able to lift/carry a maximum of 30 pounds, push/pull a maximum of 50 pounds, stand, sit, bend and walk for extended periods of time. (up to 10 pounds of computer equipment or paper).
- Must be able to work around food and cleaning products.
- Must be able to safely use kitchen equipment and appliances.
