Vopak New Energies America is looking for a Business Development Manager to join our growing business development team, and play a significant part in accelerating the transition to zero carbon fuels. This role will identify business opportunities and drive the investment process for a portfolio of projects worth several hundred million dollars.

This is a hybrid position out of our Houston, TX office.

Founded 400 years ago, Royal Vopak N.V. is a multinational midstream company operating 78 terminals in 23 countries including 9 in North America. Vopak is handling chemicals, oil, biofuels, gasses and LNG. 

New Energies such as hydrogen and renewable electricity are key components of our future energy system. Yet, their deployment is facing technical and economic challenges, especially related to storage and logistics. To solve these challenges, Vopak is investing in breakthrough technologies such as Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (“LOHC”), Hydrogen/Bromine flow batteries, CO2 energy storage or catalytic pyrolysis of plastics.

Vopak committed 1 billion Euro in equity to New Energies investment opportunities such as underground hydrogen caverns, liquid hydrogen, ammonia import/export terminals, LOHC, Long Duration Energy Storage (flow batteries, CO2 energy storage), CO2 management and plastics recycling.

What do we expect from you as a Business Development Manager, New Energies?

  • Candidates must be eligible to legally work in the United States

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Economics, Finance, Environmental Studies or a related field.  Advanced degree is a plus

  • 10+ years successful project development/investment experience in infrastructure or oil & gas projects

  • Commercial creativity with an entrepreneurial spirit

  • Familiarity with the hydrogen economy: users, producers, consumers, opportunities, technologies, cost drivers and key risks is preferred

  • Familiarity/competence with project management processes and fundamentals;

  • Track record of relevant professional experience working with and influencing large, interdisciplinary and international teams

  • Self-motivated and able to work with limited guidance

  • Flexible mindset, able to challenge traditional thinking and prepared to work outside the comfort zone.  

  • Excellent oral and written communication (oral and written forms) and presentation skills;

  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office suite (or equivalent)

  • Strong business acumen, analytical, time-management and problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to quickly learn and use new concepts and technologies

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

What does your day look like?

Your core responsibilities are:

  • Identify customers, understand customer and industry issues, develop and propose value added solutions

  • Development of strategic locations: if necessary, acquire new land, work with the engineering department and with subcontractors to apply for permits, apply for interconnection to existing infrastructure (ex. pipelines, electric grid)

  • Understand regulatory environment, identify and seek applicable subsidies and grants;

  • Coordinate the work of the project development team including relevant functions (engineering, legal, finance, etc…) as well as the work of external consultants supporting the opportunity development

  • Work with the finance team to develop financial models and perform investment feasibility studies

  • Coordinate with the Legal department on the development of agreements (Non- disclosure Agreements, Memorandums of Understanding, Letters of Intent etc…)

  • Prepare/draft customer proposals, including coordination and development of technical, commercial aspects, financial modeling and pricing

  • Prepare internal investment proposals and other key decision materials for executive review

  • Participate to Vopak’s marketing efforts for example in presenting to conferences

  • Provide input on Vopak’s global strategy

Work Environment

This position requires an employee to be in an office environment as well as exposed to outside elements.  Most extreme elements are heat in the summer months of up to 100°+ and some exposure to cold of generally no less than 0° in the winter months.  There will be exposure to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some of them hazardous.  The employee may enter confined spaces and work in elevated environments.  Employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location.  General office noise may be experienced and louder sounds and vibrations when outside.  All environments are safe with appropriate PPE.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, speak and hear.  The employee is required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; the employee may be required, on occasion, to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee may be required to climb ladders/storage tanks up to 50’ in height.  The employee may be required to enter confined spaces.  The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Employees may be required to travel by air, rail, bus, or car.
