 About the role

As the Assistant Finance and Operations Professional (FINOP), you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and managing all financial and operational aspects of our broker dealer business. You will collaborate cross-functionally to ensure compliance with industry regulations, maintain accurate financial records, and optimize operational processes to support our growth. You will also help drive the team’s priorities to fulfill the broker-dealer’s multiple mandates:

Enhance Systems & Controls - help minimize risk to protect the assets that our clients have entrusted to usMaximize Efficiency - improve our processes and look to implement automation to reduce repetitive and manual workflowsSupport Growth - work cross functionally to facilitate the launch of new products and services, ensuring that our financial, regulatory, and controls frameworks are appropriately in place

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

  • New York City: $145,000 - $170,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.  For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

 A day in the life

The ideal candidate for this role will possess a strong understanding of broker dealer operations, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, particularly in the tech-driven financial services sector. They are comfortable in a spreadsheet, talking to auditors and regulators, and working with our product and engineering teams to build out new products. On any given day you will:

  • Work with the FINOP to prepare and file weekly, monthly, and annual reporting, such as Reserve Calculations, Net Capital Computations, and year-end financial packages 
  • Complete and oversee daily reconciliations, investigating and resolving any breaks
  • Monitor firm liquidity and all transactional processes including money movements and securities processing
  • Enhance, implement, and execute against additional controls related to broker dealer compliance
  • Act as main counterpoint with auditors for our annual broker-dealer reviews

 What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar field
  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience
  • FINRA FinOp designation (Series 27) or ability to rapidly obtain
  • Strong experience with financial reporting and compliance
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar
  • Experience working in FinTech, startups, or high-growth companies
  • Experience working with auditors and/or regulators

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
