The Elevator Pitch

Join Evolv as an Applied scientist who will contribute to groundbreaking innovations in electromagnetic sensing and material discrimination technology. As a key member of the applied physics and sensing team, you'll work with magnetic field theory, novel sensor array architectures, and cutting-edge machine learning algorithms. You'll help advance the convergence of low-frequency electromagnetics, materials science, and real-time signal processing to create next-generation security screening solutions. This is a hands-on technical role where you'll apply deep physics expertise to push the boundaries of AI-powered physical security screening solutions.

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Within First Month:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the physics of weapons detection within Evolv’s core products.
  • Gain familiarity with the toolsets for assessing system performance and simulating new sensor configurations.
  • Establish relationships with engineers across ML/AI and R&D functions.

Within the First Three Months:

  • Begin hands-on work with our electromagnetic systems.
  • Participate in model training cycles, learning our data collection, annotation, and qualification processes.
  • Understand current sensor capabilities and limitations.
  • Contribute to the signal processing and threat detection codebase and take part in code reviews.

By the End of First Year:

  • Contribute to innovations in object discrimination and characterization.
  • Collaborate with R&D on advanced sensing strategies aligned to the product roadmap.
  • Design and conduct experiments to validate theoretical models.
  • Develop and test novel approaches to electromagnetic sensing challenges.
  • Work closely with senior scientists to advance core technology.
  • Participate in proofs-of-concept and demos, gathering both internal and customer feedback.

Technical Expertise Required:

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Research experience in electromagnetics and applications
  • Strong foundation in:
    • Electromagnetic field theory
    • Material properties and interactions
    • Signal processing fundamentals
    • MATLAB or Python programming, modeling, and simulation

Desired Experience:

  • Hands-on lab experience with EM sensors/systems
  • Background in statistical analysis
  • Machine learning and data analysis
  • Publication record in related fields

Where is the role located?

This role is based at our headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts. Due to the nature of our software-enabled hardware products, this position requires a minimum of 80% on-site work.

What is the salary range?

The base salary range for this full-time position is $130,000 - $150,0000 + bonus+ equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
