Job Responsibilities:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Plans, organizes, leads, and directs technical work related to product design and development activities. Leads the selection and implementation of product development projects. Translates direction of technical work into specific plans of action and directs development activities to implementation phase. Serves as a liaison and coordinates development activities of internal and external resources. Participates in continuous improvement efforts. Researches, recommends, and implements or improves new and/or existing products, processes, materials, technologies, and equipment. Will collaborate with and may lead other staff. Performs other duties as necessary and performs necessary procedures for protection of intellectual property rights.
KEY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work is primarily routine and focused on daily workflow requirements which involve detailed engineering assignments including calculations and relatively standard tests. Guidance is provided either by instruction received on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions; or in the form of independently evaluating, selecting, and applying established and well-defined engineering techniques, procedures, policies or systems. Functioning as a highly competent engineer, work requires independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard company procedures and translation of technical guidance from higher level personnel into data applicable to the particular assignment. Functioning with full competency/mastery of work area, exercises considerable latitude in determining specific project objectives and approaches to assignment. Decisions often involve substantial risk to the organization with potential for long-lasting results. Primarily involves senior/advanced level work and will collaborate with other staff. Responsible for all aspects of assigned programs/projects.

  • Defines scope, plans, organizes, leads, and directs technical work and departmental efforts related to product, process, tooling, and materials as it relates to product design and development activities. Leads in the selection, requirements, specification, initiation, and implementation of projects relating to new product application.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Concept engineering, review and analysis of data from capability studies, print tolerancing and GD&T. Investigate and research new manufacturing technologies relevant to Lighting. Develop new manufacturing capabilities competitive within the Lighting industry.
  • Translates direction of technical work into specific plans of action and directs product development activities to implementation phase. Monitors and controls costs, quality, timing, and other related aspects of projects. Understands and adheres to schedule and budgetary requirements of projects. Reports progress as required.
  • Serves as a liaison and coordinates development activities of internal and external resources. Serves as a resource by providing a problem-solving function by initiating action to overcome obstacles as they are encountered.
  • Participates in continuous improvement efforts. Researches, recommends, and implements new and/or existing products, processes, materials, and equipment. Engages in comparative and competitive analysis to ensure utilization of most appropriate and beneficial techniques in a situation, respectively.
  • Performs other duties as necessary for completion of projects and achievement of departmental goals including collaboration with other staff. Performs procedures necessary for protection of intellectual property rights.

  • Assumes projects and other duties as assigned by the Advanced Product Development Manager, Supervisor, and/or Team Leader.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • College degree in engineering or related field with understanding of project engineering practices, principles, processes, etc. Previous experience in automotive industry preferred. Automotive lighting Experience helpful.
  • Ability to carry out projects from beginning to end in coordination with internal and external contacts and work on moderate to long-term assignments which are broad in nature. Strong organizational, project management, and leadership skills to prioritize, coordinate projects, manage conflicting needs, and deal with many issues at one time.
  • Ability to multi-task and perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to calculate and analyze data, generate reports, present information, etc.
  • Basic understanding of Electrical and thermal design, LED data sheets, and optical concepts.
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams).
  • Product design experience with CAD software, NX or Catia preferred.
  • Knowledge of engineering simulation tools and interpretation of simulation data.
  • Understands and applies principles of visible light reflection and refraction to create optical models. gonio-photometer experience is helpful.
