The Aerospace Corporation is hiring a Graduate-level Risk, Reliability, and System Safety Engineering Intern.
The Systems Engineering Division (SED) provides unmatched experience in systems engineering to the U.S. government and to numerous public and private agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, consortia, and commercial companies involved in the advanced application of space technology. From systems architecture development to system analysis and optimization, astrodynamics, orbital debris, navigation, failure analysis, mission assurance, cost and schedule assessment, and economic market analysis, SED exploits an incredibly broad array of engineering and business disciplines against a diverse and dynamic portfolio of programs and national challenges.
Work Model
This position will be located 100% onsite in El Segundo, CA.
What You'll Be Doing
- Helping develop and apply new risk, reliability, and system safety modeling and analysis tools to enable efficient performance of reliability predictions and identification and tracking of safety hazards to ensure mission success for space, launch, and ground systems
- Applying cutting edge risk / reliability / system safety techniques to challenging tasks and problems of national significance
- Working with department staff in applying risk and reliability expertise for national security space and civil and commercial customers
- Participating with an interdisciplinary team in ongoing research or technical programs with academic collaboration partners
- Applying standard techniques and procedures to carry out a series of prescribed scientific and/or engineering tasks

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- Currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college/university program pursuing a Master's degree in Statistics, Reliability Engineering, Risk Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Management Science and Engineering or related disciplines
- Availability to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks outside of university term and ability to return to a degree program full-time after completion of the internship.
- Bachelor's degree in completed by internship start date
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
- Minimum GPA 3.0
- This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- GPA 3.5 or higher
- Active security clearance
- Existing knowledge of risk and/or reliability and system safety techniques (e.g., fault tree analysis, reliability predictions, FMEA, Bayesian statistics, probabilistic risk analysis, MIL STD 882E, STPA etc.)
- Experience in working in an autonomous work environment on complex projects
- Demonstrated experience in programming Microsoft applications (e.g., VBA)
- Familiarity with risk/reliability software tools (e.g., RELEX/Windchill, @Risk) a plus
- Knowledge of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) a plus

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
