Urban planners are counting on the emergence of smart cities to help improve quality of life and meet infrastructure needs for city dwellers.
According to a press release, SAP and Software AG, Germany’s two largest software companies, announced a partnership at Berlin’s Smart Country Convention to launch an open Smart City platform that leverages IoT, big data and artificial intelligence.
Cities, communities and administrative will have the opportunity to independently implement their own Smart City and Smart Country project on this development platform, which is in compliance with the standards of the European Union’s Open Urban Platform initiative.

At the Smart Country Convention, SAP and Software AG presented an example of their platform in action, showcasing a use case involving a winter service vehicle. The vehicle sends salting and gritting data to the cloud via sensors in real time, which will be available for further processing on the SAP HANA platform. IoT services from Software AG include equipment management, the onboarding of sensors and the transfer of data to the platform.
