The field of dentistry has seen significant technological advancements over the past several years, with sophisticated software replacing pen-and-paper systems, clear aligners providing an alternative to bracket-and-wire braces, and teledentistry gaining traction as a complement to in-office visits.

Dental tech companies are at the forefront of this charge. Whether they service practitioners or patients, here’s how they’re working to advance dentistry for the better.

Dental Companies and Startups to Know

Quip, a direct to-to-consumer dental care company, makes design-forward toothbrushes and other oral care tools. Founded by two industrial designers, the company focuses on one core brush line (that comes in both an old-school and a Bluetooth-enabled version) and offers a subscription service for consumables like brush heads and floss.

Membersy lets practices build and manage custom dental membership plans for uninsured patients. With the software platform, dentists can set their fees, set up recurring payments, automate reminders, create retention-focused email campaigns and track revenue.

Torch Technology wants to make the traditional, manual way of dental supply ordering a thing of the past. It does so by allowing you to manage inventory, place orders and track shipments all in one platform. Users also get access to product recommendations from specialists and exclusive prices from authorized vendors.

Dandy’s lineup of lab products and services are designed to help practices embrace digital dentistry for smoother, more streamlined operations. With an intraoral scanner and Dandy’s software, dentists can take digital impressions, track lab work and orders, manage cases, upload patient photos and more.

SmileDirectClub makes and sells clear custom aligners designed to correct smiles without the use of wires and brackets. Founded in 2014, the Nashville-based, publicly traded company ships aligners directly to customers’ doorsteps and provides access to telehealth appointments, eliminating the need for monthly in-office orthodontist visits.

Align Technology is the dental tech company behind Invisalign, the clear aligner system that’s been used by more than 14 million people, according to the company’s website. It also owns iTero, a lineup of intraoral scanner products used for precision imaging.
