Radar, short for “Radio Detection and Ranging,” is used for locating, tracking and detection. The technology sends out radio waves from a transmitter, which reflect off objects in their path and then are returned back to a receiver. The wavelength of the returned signal helps determine the properties of the object, including its size, location and speed.

The technology can be used to detect objects including precipitation, aurora, celestial bodies, ships, aircraft and spacecraft. Radar is distinct from optical and infrared sensors because it can detect faraway objects through (and including) poor weather conditions in order to determine key conditions of those objects.

Although radar is a ubiquitous technology — powering everything from news we receive through our weather apps, to air traffic control, to speed traps on the highway — the skills required by professionals who work in radar are complex and hard to find. These companies are on the lookout for top radar talent to join their teams.

Companies that Hire Radar Professionals

Aerospace is a nonprofit organization that partners with a wide variety of government, civil and commercial customers to perform technical analyses and assessments. It says it has a specific interest in radio frequency collection, communications and radar. Engineers at the company can play a role in ensuring that space systems are modernized, optimized and resilient.

BAE Systems creates, engineers and manufactures the support products and systems that world militaries needs for air, land, sea and space operations. It has a workforce of over 100,000 employees across more than 40 countries. Some of the company’s engineers need experience in the development of missile systems and radar.

STR develops technology that can be applied to solve national security challenges. According to STR, while traditional high-performance radar and sonar systems are highly integrated and monolithic, its own uses emerging commercial radio-frequency hardware to implement signal processing elements across its sensing system architecture and target hardware. The company hires sonar signal processing engineers and RF systems research engineers.

Leidos provides mission AI, cyber operations, digital modernization, integrated systems, mission operations, technology certifications and mission software systems. Its clients include those in aerospace, intelligence, healthcare, government, energy, defense and aviation markets. The company’s site testers should have experience operating and maintaining EW, EO/IR and radar systems.

HRL Laboratories was established in 1948 as the Hughes Research Laboratories. It now handles materials, microsystems, microfabrication tech, sensors, electronics and vision systems, and delivers technologies to customers in automotive, aerospace and defense industries. The company says it hires radar systems engineers.
