The Position
We’re searching for our next Technical Writer to support our federal clients and their digital services center needs. We are seeking someone who is a detail-oriented self-starter with excellent communication skills to help us create technical and strategic deliverables.
You’ll make a real impact working directly with our clients and other ICF teams to address and solve key issues, drive change, and grow our business. As our next Technical Writer, you’ll support our communications team to deliver technical writing services to our client(s).
If you have prior experience working with federal, state, and local programs, we'd love to talk to you. The position will be located in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area or can be worked remotely.
The Team
You will work with a dynamic team of communications professionals and designers and collaborate with IT, digital modernization, change management, and customer experience (CX) experts all committed to ensuring a seamless IT experience to our federal government clients.
The Work
You will work hand-in-hand with digital modernization experts to implement communications strategies and customer engagement plans that share information about services our team provides to its customers for their IT application development needs. This work includes developing technical documentation, standard operating procedures, training resources, general communications, customer stakeholder engagement materials, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research highly technical subject matter and create communications materials which are clear and understandable to a wide audience.
- Produce complex technical documentation (e.g., writing, editing, layout, design) such as detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs), IT governance policies, technical slide decks, comprehensive technical user guides, and other technical resources.
- Create, maintain, and publish IT communications and resources, such as templates, case studies, user guides, job aids, orientation materials, white papers, executive level briefings, policies, non-technical standard operating procedures, trainings, and other project documentation as needed.
- Support project intake and scoping requirements to identify the level of effort and priority for tasks.
- Create and maintain customer-facing-platform knowledge base with IT governance materials.
- Evaluate technical documentation for user-friendliness and completeness.
- Identify gaps in documentation and develop plans to address them.
- Provide technical input, editorial support, and proofreading for communications materials and executive presentations.
- Establish rapport and working relationships with clients, leadership executives, and subject matter experts and work with Help Desks to uncover needs.
- Develop training recommendations to clients, producing guides and job aids using software such as Snagit, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and others.
- Develop and deliver short-term and long-term documentation plans, explaining the schedule and prioritization of communications for those who develop, deploy and use technical applications; make recommendations to the client on how best to deliver products in documentation plan(s).
- Maintain backlog of technical and communications documents using agile project management tools such as JIRA.
- Apply U.S. Government Plain Language Standards to all work products; exhibit familiarity with ADA Section 508 Compliance.
- Apply professional-grade formatting and branding to documents and presentations using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in in English, communications, a technical field such as IT, or related related work experience and certifications
- 5+ years of experience in technical writing or a related field
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a public trust
- U.S. citizenship required (required by Federal government for the position).

- Strong writer and editor.
- Problem-solver who is organized, able to balance a dynamic product backlog, and has the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines at once.
- Flexibility in handling overlapping project goals and changing priorities.
- Proven success in building and sustaining partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Comfortable liaising with clients to gather feedback on work products.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills with a talent for communicating clearly and concisely and collaborating with all types of personalities.
- Demonstrated ability to understand complex technical processes and reframe them in plain language for targeted audiences.
- Ability to think creatively and provide innovative solutions to clients’ communications challenges and problems.
- Understands IT as it relates to increased efficiency in business processes across a company or agency.
- Familiarity with agile software development processes.
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including PowerPoint, Teams, Word, SharePoint, and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working on federal contracts or similar communication setting.
- Experience supporting enterprise-level IT programs and communications.
- Familiarity with federal Plain Language Guidelines, Section 508 requirements, and Agile and/or development cycles such as SDLC or EPLC.
- Experience working with cloud-based platforms, including Salesforce, Appian, ServiceNow, MuleSoft, etc.
- Experience creating training materials, including decks, scripts, handouts, and image/video editing (such as Snagit and Camtasia).
- Experience with SharePoint.
- Comfort with presenting or running trainings with large groups.
- Experience in design or creative work.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:
$69,862.00 - $118,765.00
