Job Description
The Role
A Senior Staff Engineer is a technical specialist role and senior member within our SEEK Group Engineering teams. A Senior Staff Engineer is a sub-domain subject matter expert, whose primary focus is to partner closely with Engineering Managers, Heads of Engineering, Architecture, and Heads of Product to drive the alignment of sub-domain strategy to SEEK’s overall technical strategy.
Day-to-day, you will work collaboratively with your team management peers (Engineering Managers), providing technical guidance and specialist knowledge of codebases/systems/tools/platforms across multiple teams in which you work and support the resolution of technical issues and decisions as the need arises.
A Senior Staff Engineer advocates for, and empowers, technical best practices which support the delivery of software across multiple teams or technology specialisations within a sub-domain. You will be accountable for advocating clean, scalable, testable code, ensuring high development practices and standards across your sub-domain. Line Management is an optional component of this role.
We are seeking a highly skilled individual contributor with expertise in React.js, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS architecture. Experience in AI/GenAI is a strong advantage. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of collaborating with senior stakeholders and thriving in an environment with minimal guidance. A hands-on, innovative approach is essential, as the role requires someone who is a tech pioneer and trailblazer.
Key Accountabilities
Build:
- Ensure services, systems, and platforms within your sub-domain are fit for purpose, well-architected, and follow SEEK development practices
- Drive platform health and technical best practices across Engineering teams
- Be the technical escalation person within your sub-domain, supporting production incidents through to resolution
Execute:
- Strengthen engineering discipline and technology capability across sub-domain
- Partner with technical stakeholders and support the Head of Engineering in capacity planning, risk management, and prioritisation of technical work
- Provide technical guidance, break through blockers, and facilitate technical discussions impacting your sub-domain
Support:
- Grow Staff Engineer technical leadership capabilities through coaching and mentoring
- Strengthen the technical capabilities of your sub-domain by identifying and nurturing engineering talents
- Support the wellbeing of your sub-domain by advocating for a safe, inclusive, diverse, and engaged culture
Strengthen:
- Contribute to the engineering community at SEEK (e.g., open-source projects, mentoring, guilds)
- Develop a profile within the external engineering community
- Proactively seek out learning opportunities for self and others
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Extensive experience in designing, developing, and maintaining cloud-first applications and APIs, with a focus on well-architected systems following SEEK development practices.
- Proven ability to lead technical roadmaps, implement CI/CD practices, and drive platform health across engineering teams.
- Strong coding skills with experience in writing well-tested, secure, and readable software using current patterns and tooling.
- Demonstrated experience in technical leadership, including mentoring, coaching, and guiding software engineers within and across teams.
- Ability to influence and negotiate with senior stakeholders, focusing on outcomes that align with overall strategy.
- Experience in managing operational support duties, including on-call support and after-hours work as required.
- Proactive approach to knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and participation in internal and external engineering communities.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Experience in defining key technical metrics for service/system/platform health and leading technical transformational change within multiple teams or sub-domains.
- Previous experience in attracting and recruiting software engineers, acting as a brand ambassador for the organisation.
- Demonstrated ability to support the professional development and promotion of Software Engineers and Staff Engineers across multiple teams.
