As a Customer-facing Sales Engineer focusing on AT&T Optical Labs, Operations, and Planning organizations, you will have the exciting opportunity to develop and maintain relationships with key personnel in product planning, engineering, labs, IT, and operations. You will lead technical assignments, including customer meetings, managing lab and deployment issues, designing test beds, and negotiating testing objectives and hardware requirements. Additionally, you will configure products for testing and proof of concepts. Your ability to lead cross-team discussions with internal stakeholders and customers will be crucial to establishing favorable outcomes for all parties. This role involves executing multiple essential duties and responsibilities as indicated below, with limited supervision. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with AT&T certification testers and project manage lab support to ensure timely and successful deployment of new technology into the AT&T network
    • Prepare and work with internal teams to prepare multiple customer deliverables required for lab entry including testing scenarios, statement of work, technical prospectus, rack front drawings and fiber running lists
    • Manage issue resolution with customer and internal stakeholders to achieve favorable outcomes and push internally for timely resolution of issues 
    • Work to identify and prevent testing delays by clearly defining test case scenarios based on network requirements and communicating out of scope features/applications and solution limitations that will not impact deployment.
    • Perform knowledge transfer/training session with internal and customer
    • Negotiate hardware requirements with customer to minimize the lab setup expense without impacting their ability to complete timely testing of the solution, develop and execute installation plans to create and augment test beds for certification testing
  • Engage with AT&T labs, product and operations teams to understand the solution and deployment requirements to be sure product certification testing aligns to meet these needs
  • Identify new business opportunities for new technology that align to their technology evolution.
  • Lead meetings with Sales, PLM and R&D to review customer requirements and negotiate a timely delivery of new features to meet AT&T’s deployment timelines
  • This role requires being on-site in AT&T’s Middletown, NJ certification lab
  • Up to 25% travel required for internal and customer facing meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Technical knowledge in telecom, converged packet/optical transmission systems (DWDM ROADMs), L2 switching and network architectures for metro applications.
  • Strong teaching / documentation skills for training customers as well as internal Ciena personnel  technical writing, power point, excel
  • Flexible, able to prioritize multiple tasks and multiple customer relationships with limited supervision
  • Ability to work with cross functional team to achieve program goals

Additional Desired Skills

  • Industry certifications a plus
  • Understanding of Ciena network modeling, design, Teams environments, SalesForce and Sharepoint tools
  • Familiarity in test equipment (power meters, traffic generators, OSA’s, OTDR’s, etc) configuration and automation, understands results

Experience and Education

  • BS EE or CS with 3+ years’ direct customer engagement experience working with large telecom carriers
  • Experience working in AT&T a plus

The annual total target compensation pay range for this position is $160,900 - $256,900. This includes both base and incentive compensation. (For Sales roles that are TTC in the Salary Range Tool)


Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.

Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission. In addition to competitive compensation, Ciena offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, participation in 401(K) (USA) & DCPP (Canada) with company matching, Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), company-paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time.
