Position Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist will use their lived experience with Behavioral Health and/or Substance Abuse Recovery and the Justice system, to guide, coach, and mentor Aetna members who are working towards recovery. Further, they will use their lived experience of recovery to assist the Aetna team in understanding how best to support and coordinate care for our members. The Peer Support Specialist will share coping strategies, wellness tools and other resources, as well as information regarding substance abuse and mental illness and the justice system with Aetna team members.

Fundamental Components include:

- Regularly attend case rounds and assist the team with coordinating care for members and identifying members who may benefit from Peer Support Services.

- Orient and educate the care management team as how to best support members in recovery, reinforcing the member Care Plan, maintaining community tenure, adjusting tasks to fit with the member’s culture, language, and religion, improving access to care, identifying health care needs, and reducing unnecessary hospitalizations, emergency services, and recidivism

- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, providers, and justice system personnel on the principals of recovery, and opportunities for improving and understanding the social determinants of health that may be impacting member’s health and treatment plan through various communication channels.

- Assist care managers and coordinators in helping members to identify socio-economic issues that affect their overall health and develop health/social management plans and goals.

- May attend medical, behavior health or community appointments with members when appropriate to improve adherence to treatment and advocate for getting the best possible care.

- Assist members in setting and attaining short and long-term goals.

- Suggest approaches that encourage members to participate in wellness and recovery activities at a pace that is comfortable for them.

Required Qualifications:

- Experience working in a justice-involved setting or with individuals with justice involvement.

- Certified Peer Support Specialist in Virginia

- 1-2 years’ experience in community/outpatient setting working with individuals with substance abuse or mental health issues

- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals with substance abuse and/or mental health issues and justice involvement

- Ability to educate providers regarding recovery-based principals

- Working knowledge of multi-system engagement and outreach programming related to health care and clinical education

- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and manage multiple priorities

- Ability to work independently

- Strong communication skills

- Experience using computer and MS Office Suite applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related

- Experience working in a Managed Care setting.

- Bilingual skills desired

Education :

Required- High School Diploma or GED,

Certification as a Peer Support Specialist by the state of Virginia, or the willingness to obtain

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$18.50 - $35.29

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
