Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a part-time multiplatform editor (copy editor) to join its Opinions department. The Opinions copy desk handles all types of opinion journalism, designs and publishes our print pages, and prepares material for online publication.

As a multiplatform editor, you will edit opinion columns, letters to the editor, editorials and long-form essays. You should be able to shift among these roles, always with a bias toward prioritizing online publication. You should have outstanding editing skills and a knack for writing lively, engaging headlines, especially those that work well for search and social media. This role reports to the Opinions copy chief.

Motivation

  • You understand how to use words to drive interest, excitement and readership.

  • You want to engage readers with smart opinions journalism.

  • You want to help Post writers – professional and from outside the news business – to shine.

  • You want to dig deep into research to make sure the facts are correct and the assertions made by a writer are based on those facts.

  • You are organized, driven and eager to help create Post Opinions products for the future.

Responsibilities

  • Edit columns, editorials, letters to the editor, newsletters and the next generation of products Post Opinions creates.

  • Handle the traditional copy-editing duties of upholding quality and standards, following Post style and guidelines.

  • Strong headline- and caption-writing skills – and understanding the tone and approach required among discrete platforms – are vital in this role.

  • Optimize for digital distribution, including SEO, recirculation, tagging and linking.

  • Understand the basics of social media and engaging audiences on different platforms.

  • Assist in the design and updating of print news pages.

  • This role will include nights, weekends and holidays. Once fully trained, this role will include a rotation of Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Qualifications

  • Three-plus years of editing experience at a mid-to-large-market news organization or a digital outlet with a commitment to strong journalism.

  • A copy-editing test will be required.

  • An established record as a collaborative and proactive editor who is excited to foster compelling storytelling across platforms.

  • A critical thinker who is comfortable juggling many tasks and switching gears with ease.

  • Experience with print newspaper design is a plus.

  • The ability and confidence to work alone in off hours – making smart decisions and knowing when to reach out for input or help.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks in real time; work quickly without sacrificing quality; and communicate collegially and effectively.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and five to seven examples of work (as PDFs) to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Opinions Copy Chief Trey Johnson.
