Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Software Development Manager to lead our Adaptive Experiences team. This team is responsible for building and maintaining the software powering cutting edge experiences on our site. The team’s domain encompasses community, personalization, and AI driven experiences across all of our content surfaces. As manager of this team, you will work closely with other teams within engineering and product to implement unique best in class experiences. This role requires a manager who can see the big picture while taking ownership of critical deliverables and functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and coach talented full stack engineers
  • Recruit new engineers and grow a strong team
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks effectively
  • Manage team members across projects in a fast paced cross functional environment
  • Provide foundational support and empower team members to own their work
  • Drive forward and provide a vision on engineering goals and technology usage
  • Work with stakeholders in engineering and product to prioritize milestones and mitigate business risks
  • Manage an on call cycle and ensure constant coverage on critical systems
  • Take ownership of stability of our site experiences
  • Provide powerful insights by surfacing metrics and performance data to stakeholders and other engineers
  • Work closely with other engineering teams to understand their systems and work within the constraints of different technical stacks
  • Establish and foster a standard of engineer excellence that will maintain stability and quality across all of our systems
  • Ensure quality code and cloud practices are being used by the team

Qualifications

It’s okay not to meet 100% of these requirements! We’re primarily looking for people who meet some of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, equivalent field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8 years +of experience working as a software engineer
  • Experience working with back-end languages Java and Python.
  • Proficiency with back-end frameworks such as Flask and Nodejs.
  • Experience working with front-end technologies HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
  • Proficiency with web frameworks such as Next, Astro and others.
  • Experience working with front end framework React.
  • Strong experience in command line (Unix & Linux) navigation and revision tracking (Git)
  • Experience with DevOps technologies such as Docker and Jenkins.
  • Experience working with designers and design frameworks.
  • Varied experience with databases, MongoDB and MySQL preferred.
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills for technical and business audiences.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:

144,600.00 - 241,100.00 USD Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
