Meet Fetch Engineering:

At Fetch, we are passionate about solving challenging problems and embracing ambiguity. Our engineering philosophy promotes adaptability and innovation over rigid adherence to rules. Our engineers thrive in complex environments, making well-informed decisions even in uncertain situations. We seek out the necessary information and focus on action and impact, while consistently upholding high technical standards. In this role, you will be a technical leader, shaping best practices to build world-class, user-facing technology. You will mentor fellow engineers, fostering technical growth and collaboration within the team. As a hands-on leader, you will actively contribute to the codebase and deliver features alongside your team.

The Role:

As an iOS Software Engineering Manager, you’ll play a critical role in both driving technical excellence and fostering the growth of a high-performing team. You will manage a group of engineers, while also having your hands in the code, building and reviewing critical parts of our applications. When you’re not making technical contributions, you will focus on team building, coaching, performance management, career development, and organizational improvements. This role gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through mentorship, cross-functional partnership, and building a strong technical foundation. You’ll partner cross-functionally with product, design, and other engineering leaders to drive outcomes, not just output. You’ll be in a position of trust, teaching and mentoring ICs, with a focus on improving both technical craftsmanship and team health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-On Coding Actively contributes to the iOS codebase, implementing features, refactoring for performance, and maintaining high-quality standards. Lead by example, demonstrating best practices and setting a high bar for technical excellence in coding, architecture, and delivery.
  • 1:1s and Growth Plans: Conduct regular 1:1s with team members, setting growth plans and individual goals that align with both their aspirations and team objectives.
  • Performance Management and Evaluations: Run quarterly performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and support career development through actionable growth plans and goal-setting.
  • Resourcing and Hiring: Lead resourcing efforts, thoughtfully allocating “play-the-player” assignments to optimize team strengths and development opportunities. Participate in hiring loops, calibrations, and onboarding processes to build a high-performing team and uphold our culture.
  • Culture Carrier: Act as a role model and ambassador for our company culture, values, and practices, fostering an inclusive, innovative, and collaborative work environment.
  • Feedback Gathering: Solicit and provide continuous feedback to drive individual and team growth. Be the voice of your team’s needs to other leaders, ensuring they have the support, tools, and environment to succeed.
  • Code Quality and Coaching: Review pull requests, offering constructive feedback and technical coaching to support team skill development and high-quality output.
  • Build the Right Way: Set and reinforce standards for building robust, scalable, and maintainable code, with a focus on release stability and aligning with the release train cadence.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work autonomously with product, design, and other teams to ensure alignment and drive outcomes that create value for our users.
  • Peer Collaboration: See your fellow Engineering Managers as your “first team.” Collaborate to elevate organizational standards, promote knowledge-sharing, and foster a culture of collective problem-solving.

In your tool-bag:

  • 5+ years in software development, including experience building high-quality, backend services with high stability.
  • Hands-on coding skills and architecture patterns, with the ability to lead by example technically.
  • Proven experience as an Engineering Manager, leading, mentoring, and developing a team of engineers.
  • Skilled in performance management, feedback delivery, and creating growth opportunities for engineers.
  • A natural coach with a passion for helping others grow, providing actionable feedback and guidance that encourages continuous improvement.
  • Skilled in working across functions to drive aligned, impactful outcomes, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Eager to improve processes and team health, with a mindset for problem-solving that considers both immediate and long-term impacts.
