Summary

Process Development Engineer: Develops new or modified process formulations, defines processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and reviews processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of products. Involvement may begin at any step from pilot plant to full-scale manufacturing. Coordinates design requirement review with appropriate engineering/scientific personnel to ensure compatibility of processing methods. Compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. May conceive and plan projects involving definition and selection of new concepts, equipment automation technology, and approaches in the processing or development of new or improved processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing epitaxy process guidance to the Epitaxy manufacturing team.
  • Continuous improvement activities based on SPC and 6-sigma principles.
  • Working within a cleanroom environment with the prerequisite use of cleanroom clothing.
  • Working with various computer software packages including specialist or bespoke computer systems.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation in order to provide effective support to the Epitaxy manufacturing team and the Caswell wafer fab.
  • Analyse, interpret and respond to measured product and process data when required.
  • Support and implement new process introductions as appropriate.
  • Support trouble shooting activities as appropriate, in particular, assist the Epitaxy Process and Epitaxy Equipment Engineering groups with fault finding and recovery of processes and tools.
  • Participate in key information exchanges session such as chip review meetings, yield review meetings, Epitaxy team handovers, etc.
  • Mentor shift process engineer and technician staff to improve skill base within team as required.
  • Support Epitaxy team in reporting out performance, maintaining statistics and organising workloads, etc.
  • Meet individual and team targets and objectives.
  • Adhere to all site safety and environmental procedures.

Qualifications

  • Degree in a semiconductor-related field, with a minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven process engineering experience (familiarity with 6-sigma and similar methodologies preferable).

Skills

Essential:

  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of working within a high-technology manufacturing or production environment.
  • Knowledge of working within a cleanroom or laboratory environment.
  • Experience of computer-controlled semiconductor processing equipment or vacuum systems.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing execution systems (MES) such as PROMIS and MES concepts such as product re-work procedures, task scheduling, data collection and SPC.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving abilities, especially with regard to the scheduling and planning of work flows.
  • Competent PC user (including the use of Microsoft Office).

Desirable:

  • Wide ranging knowledge of semiconductor fabrication techniques especially with regard to the fabrication of III-V based devices.
  • Knowledge of photonic integrated circuit manufacture would be an advantage.

Other Requirements

  • Working within a cleanroom environment with the prerequisite use of cleanroom clothing.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Working pattern will be day shift (nominally 9am-5pm) with overtime as determined by production requirements. Out-of-hours support and occasional shift (including night) working may be required.
