At the moment, whenever a transaction is processed on a POS terminal (payment card machine), physical retailers have no idea who the paying customer is, unless they use a loyalty program. Think of when you go to a supermarket and you pay by card, unless you go to a supermarket that has a loyalty program and you get your loyalty card out, the POS terminal doesn't tell the retailer if you're a new or returning customer, demographics, gender, etc. Unlike e-ecommerce, in physical retail customer identification always had to be a separate step because the payment terminal is not built to self-identify the paying customer. Hence, a plethora of valuable data is lost or underutilized. With Zeal’s advanced Smart POS plugin, the company integrates with POS terminals globally to provide payment acquirers and ISVs with a unique differentiator for their POS terminals. The merchants of our partners benefit from world-class data, analytics & tools to predict consumer behavior using Artificial Intelligence, enabling merchants to unlock the full potential of transactional data.

About The Role: 

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one of our squads. In this role, you’ll directly manage a team of engineers, focusing on delivering scalable, high-performance solutions while aligning engineering efforts with product and business goals specific to your squad.

You’ll work alongside other Engineering Managers, Technical Leads, and Product Managers to ensure consistent engineering practices across the company while fostering a high-performing, self-organized, and growth-focused team.

This role requires strong stakeholder management skills, a problem-solving mindset, and the ability to balance technical excellence with business impact.

Your Main Responsibilities Are to:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers within your assigned squad, focusing on continuous improvement and self-organization.
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and create tailored career development plans.
  • Cultivate a team culture rooted in innovation, curiosity, and accountability.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Customer Success, and other key stakeholders to align squad efforts with business unit objectives.
  • Translate product goals into clear technical requirements and delivery plans.
  • Maintain transparency with stakeholders, providing regular updates on progress, challenges, and achievements.
  • Identify and resolve recurring technical and operational issues, focusing on scalable, long-term solutions.
  • Implement and continuously refine engineering best practices, covering quality, performance optimization, monitoring, alerting, and security.
  • Collaborate with other Engineering Managers to ensure process consistency across squads.
  • Work hand-in-hand with Product Managers, UX Designers, and DevOps to deliver end-to-end solutions.
  • Coordinate with other squads when interdependencies arise, ensuring smooth project delivery.
  • Advocate for a cloud-first strategy (preferably AWS) to drive scalability and resilience.
  • Support technical leads in architectural decisions, ensuring maintainability and long-term stability.
  • Champion best practices for monitoring, performance tuning, and security compliance.
  • Encourage the use of microservices, messaging queues, and other scalable architecture patterns where appropriate.

        The Ideal Candidate Should Have:

        • 2+ years of people management experience in engineering teams.
        • 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience.
        • Proven track record of leading cross-functional engineering teams in a fast-paced, agile environment.
        • Strong technical expertise in cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and distributed systems.
        • In-depth knowledge of software quality, performance optimization, monitoring, alerting, and security.
        • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements and optimize engineering workflows.
        • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a history of close collaboration with Product and Operations teams.
        • A growth mindset and a passion for mentoring and developing engineering talent.

          Nice to Haves:

          • Experience working with modern backend and client-side technologies (PHP, Node.js, MySQL, React, React Native).
          • Background in fintech or other highly regulated industries.
          • Familiarity with agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
          • Experience with event-driven architecture and microservices.
          • Knowledge of financial systems logic (e.g., fraud detection, compliance).
