Job Description:
Bachelor Thesis at a Rosette Angle Optimisation
Sustainability is the main challenge of the aviation industry in the coming decades. Carbon emissions need to be reduced to a target of net-zero by the middle of the decade to ensure continued access to air travel while not endangering our environment. Ensuring compatibility with climate objectives will require a significant improvement in efficiency, both aerodynamic and propulsive when compared to current aircraft.
We are seeking for a highly motivated bachelor*s student who is willing to remarkably contribute in the research for a promising future aircraft design.
Torsion boxes are commonly used in aircrafts for lifting surfaces. The covers of torsion boxes are usually constructed of CFRP consisting of several uni-directional plies each in one of the four directions: 0°, 90° or +/-45°. These four directions are sometimes referred to as the fibre rosette and the rotation of the entire stack is referred to as a rosette angle rotation
Rotation of the rosette angle can have a large effect on the structural behaviour to its effects on the bending-torsion coupling of the torsion box as well as its effect on local failure criteria and thus on both the induced drag of the aircraft and its structural weight.
We are seeking for a highly motivated Bachelor student who will get the opportunity to participate in improving our structure optimisation capabilities for fibre angles. At this thesis you will get familiar with the internal MDO software Lagrange. This goes with a mentoring by experienced professionals.
Are you willing to prototype different potential solutions for our in-house optimisation tool Lagrange? We look forward to your application.
Your benefits
- International environment with the opportunity to network globally
- Mentorship and guidance
- Work with modern/varied technologies
- We at Airbus see you as a fully-fledged team member and your internship is part of a real Research and Technology project.
- Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus community to expand your own network
Your tasks and responsibilities will include the delivery of following results:
- Getting familiar with internal structural optimisation software Lagrange
- Define the rosette angle (top and bottom cover separately or together) as a design variable
- Determine the aerodynamic loads (aeroelastic analysis)
- Perform a sizing of the torsion box to fulfil all sizing criteria
- Examine behaviour of buckling constraints due to changes in the rosette angle
- Compare analytical and numerical gradients of the buckling criteria w.r.t. the rosette angle
- Post-process and present the results
Required knowledge and qualifications
- Enrolled full-time student in the field of aerospace engineering
- Good skills in object-oriented programming (C++ and Python)
- Business fluent in English, German desirable
- You are a team player, communicative and have an independent way of working.
This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
