Antitrust, Competition & Regulatory - LondonJob Description

We're Norton Rose Fulbright - a global law firm with over 50 offices and 7,000 employees worldwide. We provide the world’s preeminent corporations and financial institutions with a full business law service. At Norton Rose Fulbright, our strategy and our culture are closely entwined. We know that our expansion will mean little unless it is underpinned by truly global collaboration and we understand that pioneering work only takes place when our people have room to move and think beyond boundaries. As well as the relevant skills and experience, we're looking for people who are innovative, commercial and value the work that they do.

The Team

Our Antitrust, Competition and Regulatory (ACR) group has established a leading international reputation, with a team of over 80 competition law specialists across our global network. Our practice is at the cutting edge of developing antitrust, competition and regulatory work.

In the UK our team of over [40] lawyers based in London works on some of the highest profile contentious and non-contentious competition matters in the market.  The team covers all aspects of antitrust, competition and regulatory work, from damages litigation to mergers, regulatory appeals to market investigations.

Our team undertakes the full range of competition litigation: acting for both claimants and defendants in both standalone and follow-on claims.  We are involved in litigation in the Competition Appeal Tribunal, High Court and (working with EU qualified team members and/or our European offices) the European Courts.

The Role

An opportunity has arisen for an associate, senior associate or counsel (depending on seniority) to join our Antitrust, Competition & Regulatory team in London. This role is for a qualified solicitor.  Although the team covers a wide range of contentious and non-contentious work there is a specific need for competition litigation experience.  The role would primarily involve contentious work but there would be opportunities to be involved in other areas of competition law if this was of interest.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading and supervising a team preparing for court and Competition Appeal Tribunal hearings
  • Developing litigation strategy and advising clients accordingly
  • Drafting submissions to competition authorities and courts
  • Advising clients on court and Tribunal process and procedure
  • Liaising with opposing counsel in discussions and through correspondence
  • Liaising with counsel on all of the above
  • Researching and advising on competition law issues more generally
  • Assisting in development of knowledge and business development products

Skills and Experience Required

The candidate shall be working at a firm with an excellent reputation in the area of EU/UK Competition law. While a broad range of competition law experience is welcomed, competition litigation experience is essential for a senior level position.

  • Possess strong drafting skills
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for dealing with complex cases that require a creative approach
  • Communicate effectively on both a practical and intellectual level and demonstrate a willingness to listen
  • Possess strong organisational and project management skills and the willingness to drive a complex and time critical case to a successful and timely outcome
  • Demonstrate strong relationship building skills
  • Have an interest in, and an aptitude for, developing the firm’s business, including proactively building a network of personal business contacts and collaborating with colleagues on marketing activities
  • Possess strong business acumen - an interest in and understanding of the markets in which clients and their counterparties operate and the commercial drivers of individual matters.
