The Role
The Financial Times is seeking an experienced reporter to take on the role of Asia Financial Correspondent, based in Hong Kong. This is one of the most wide-ranging financial reporting jobs on the paper. For an enthusiastic correspondent, it offers enormous scope to break news, get big interviews and contribute to ongoing stories around the world.
The core of the role is to cover financial activity in Hong Kong and across the wider Asia-Pacific region, working in collaboration with country reporters. Many of the largest international banks have regional headquarters in Hong Kong. The city is also a crucial location for our coverage of HSBC, Standard Chartered and Prudential, three of the biggest companies in the FTSE100.
Hong Kong is home to many hedge funds and private equity players, often serving as a base for their China operations; building relationships with these investors, as well as the advisers who serve them, can be a rich source of stories. From regional deal-making activity to Chinese listings on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the local operations of professional service firms and a burgeoning crypto sector, there are many veins to tap. The correspondent’s wide remit often provides the chance to contribute to global stories as well.
Economic weakness in mainland China and geopolitical tension with the US continue to cast a shadow over Hong Kong’s economy, limiting deal activity. But after several challenging years due to the national security crackdown and Covid-19, the city is bouncing back, and its natural advantages as a business centre are reasserting themselves.
News is the heart of the job - and you will find strong demand from FT editors - but we want and expect the correspondent to write across a range of formats, from sharp analysis to magazine features. You may also be asked to represent the FT at events and in the media.
Your Skills
You will have proven skills as a source-building, scoop-getting financial reporter. You can count on strong support from colleagues, including our China team and the Asia capital markets correspondent, but editors will be looking for you to generate the exciting, original financial news the FT thrives on. You will be able to write for all parts of the website and newspaper, from strong spot news to deft analysis on a range of subjects; there is opportunity to write for FT Weekend as well, if you have the aptitude and the interest.
Good communication skills are important. You will need to work closely with colleagues around the region as well as financial correspondents in London and New York. Editors in Hong Kong will be eager to hear your ideas, but especially on the bigger global names and stories, London will take an interest as well. A collegiate approach is vital: the Hong Kong team is close-knit and everybody works together.
Hong Kong is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Asia and offers a high quality of life. The national security law has changed the political environment but had little impact on daily life, while the city’s many other attractions, such as its low tax rates, remain unchanged.
Please submit your application by the end of the day, Wednesday 5th March 2025.
The use of AI
Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism. Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.
We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.
Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
