Department Summary

We apply state of the art science and technology to develop and deliver high quality dosage forms for Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) product portfolio through:

  • Physicochemical evaluation leading to optimized pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical properties.

  • Application of Quality by Design (QbD) principles in the development of robust and phase appropriate formulations and processes from laboratory to market scale.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.  

The Opportunity

  • Exploring the effects of pressure on organic molecular crystal systems exhibiting polymorphic relationships

  • Utilization of solid-state NMR spectroscopy to explore intermolecular interactions in the crystal systems of interest

  • Detailed solid-state characterization of thermodynamic relationships among the polymorphs studied

  • Computational crystal structure prediction and analysis of predicted crystal form landscapes

  • Application of new crystallization techniques to crystallize potential new polymorphs

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student). 

Required Majors:

  • Chemistry

  • Pharmaceutical Sciences

  • Chemical Engineering

  • or other related field

Required Skills:

  • A working knowledge of techniques used in solid-state characterization, for example powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), microscopy (PLM), infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, etc.

  • A working knowledge of thermodynamics, solubility, and crystallization concepts

  • Proficiency in solid-state NMR spectroscopy is highly desirable

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working with computational software for crystal structure prediction/analysis and density functional theory calculations (preferred but not required)

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  California is $25-$45 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
